The horrified bride-to-be, Hastapuram Mounika, 18, was reportedly forced to watch as her parents and relatives dragged Mahankali Anil, 22, from a Hindu temple where they were due to wed and into the street for the honour killing.
Witnesses described how the water worker's throat was slit, and then his head and body were crushed with the boulders in the shocking incident in Thimmapur, central India.
Reports also said Mahankali was also stabbed several times and beaten black and blue. Hastapuram had to reportedly be dragged from the scene.
The pair had been seeing each other for more than a year, during which time her parents had tried to keep the in-love couple apart.
A previous attempt to elope had been thwarted when Hastapuram's parents told police and priests their daughter was under 18 and therefore a minor.
That fact enabled her parents to file a kidnap case against Mahankali and consequently he was sent to jail.
Hastapuram was then sent away to study so she could not see him when he was released.
But they rekindled their romance upon her return and decided to run away again, reports local media, now that she had turned 18.
Then when her parents realised she was about to wed Mahankali at the local Hindu temple, they rushed there to confront him.
