Militants blow up Escravos gas pipeline in Delta

Militants blow up Escravos gas pipeline in Delta
For the second time in less than one month, Niger Delta militants in the early hours of Friday blew up another section of the Escravos gas trunkline behind Salvation City near Ogbe-Ijoh in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the incident happened at about 2am. Sources told newsmen that the violent militants used dynamites and other dangerous weapons to carry out the attack.

Although, details of the attack was still sketchy at the time of filing this report, an official of the Delta State government described the attack as a major blow to gas production in the country.

It was gathered further that the attacked pipeline belongs to phase two of the Escravos-Lagos gas pipeline owned and operated by the Nigerian Gas Company Limited (NGC).

No militant group in the region has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Although, a military source around the area confirmed the incident, the spokesman of the Joint Task Force in the region, Col. Isa Ado, couldnot be reached for comment.

It could be recalled that militant groups including the Niger Delta Avengers and Red Egbesu Fighters have threatened to cripple the nation’s economy if the FG, among other things, fails to address the under-development of the Niger Delta region and stop trial of ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.
