After a long wait and a forced stay-at-home after summer break, students are set to return to school tomorrow.
Vanguard reports that students are said to be returning to school on Monday, September 22 after an enforced summer break because of Ebola although with lingering fears about the virus and calls for a further delay by a major teachers’ union.
Expressing his fears, the head of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Michael Olukoya, was quoted saying: “The safety measures to contain the spread of Ebola have not been put in place,”
However, going down the memory lane, it would be recalled that out of the twenty people recorded to have contracted the deadly disease in Nigeria, eight are dead.
Also the Federal Government previously postponed resumption of classes at all public and private schools until October 13 but brought the resumption date forward to September 22, due to the lower rate of confirmed cases in the country.
There has however been no new confirmed cases of Ebola in Nigeria for 10 days, although some 350 people remain under watch for symptoms of the virus in the financial capital, Lagos, and oil city of Port Harcourt.
Notwithstanding, members of The Nigeria Union Of Teachers still have reservations about the September 22 resumption date due to how fast the disease can be spread through close contact with bodily fluids of a person displaying symptoms — which has claimed more than 2,630 lives in West Africa this year. It would be recalled that just recently, Following protests and criticism from several individuals, organizations and teachers over the scheduled resumption for schools across the country in the face of Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan gave a useful explanation on the matter, revealing why schools must open by September 22.
