Commanders of the Nigerian Army are preparing plans for a decisive assault aimed at recapturing the territory of the so-called ‘Islamic Caliphate’ and eliminating of all the insurgents. The preparations are amidst rise of moral due to recent successful operations in Konduga and Bazza.
An army source, in its comments to SaharaReporters, expressed confidence that the days of Boko Haram occupying any significant territory in the three troubled states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe were numbered.
“We will hit them from the air and from all sides on the ground,” the officer said.
He also noted that the commanders had re-absorbed all the soldiers who fled a few weeks ago into the territory of Cameroon. No legal action, no punishment would be applied. Instead, the military men would be
trained.
Many of the soldiers had been sent to undergo short training courses at Minna military facility in Niger State.
In addition, all the troops stationed in endangered Maiduguri, Borno State, were ordered to return to their barracks by or before Wednesday this week.
With military feeling better, the spirits of civilians in the northeast rise as well. According to SaharaReporters, many people who had previously fled from Mubi, Adamawa State, were seen going back to the town on September 21, Sunday.
The returnees included students, who had left Mubi about a week ago upon hearing that Boko Haram insurgents seized Michika and Mubi was their following targets, and some soldiers in Mubi, who had also retreated, but then returned to their positions.
The troops in the area would be reinforced with at least five brand new armoured vehicles. They were being deployed to Vimtrin, the home town of the Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Alex Badeh.
Boko Haram fighters had reduced the intensity of their attacks in the area. They had reportedly deserted the town of Kawuri and returned to their base in Bama, as the word came to them that the Nigerian troops are about to embark on a massive onslaught.
It would be noted that after a couple of attempts to recapture Bazza, the troops were able to recapture this town in Adamawa State.
A son of ex President Olusegun Obasanjo, Lieutenant Colonel Adeboye Obasanjo, was injured in one of such operations, when a group of insurgents ambushed his platoon about two weeks ago.
